About the Artist:-Ray specialises in seascapes,
studies of estuaries and harbours. He ran a graphic art company
for many years and his printed work has appeared on many greetings
cards. He runs seasonal courses from his Exmouth studio in
Devon, North Cornwall and in north-west Brittany at Concarneau
and Pont-Aven. Above his dark background allows a contrast
to be set up to emphasise the highlights of the painting.
The composition is assisted by the placement of the exagerrated
line of the sea wall giving a triangle shape. This is typical
of Ray's work with strong verticals and contrasting diagonals
with boats resting at low tide.
His mixed media work combines underpainting
of felt pen and watercolour with highlights and a touch or
two of pastels. A regular contributor to The Artist magazine,
he has also produced articles for International Artist and
Pastel Artist International. He is the author of "Watercolour
Plus".
